How we configure Washington

Evaluation clock

An initial evaluation must be completed and eligibility determined within 35 school days after the district receives written parental consent, unless the parent and district agree in writing to a different timeline. The day consent is received is day zero, and the parent must receive the completed evaluation report by the 35th school day. (WAC 392-172A-03005).

Initial IEP meeting

A meeting to develop the IEP must be held within 30 calendar days of the determination that the student needs special education and related services. (WAC 392-172A-03105; 34 CFR § 300.323(c)(1)).

Goal alignment

SMART goals aligned to Washington State K-12 Learning Standards, plus functional and adaptive domains.

IEP system & forms

No single mandated statewide IEP software. OSPI publishes model forms, and districts and educational service districts choose their own IEP platforms.

Transition planning

Transition components flagged for review by age 16, supporting Indicator 13.
