How we configure New Jersey
Evaluation clock
New Jersey runs one combined clock: evaluation, eligibility determination and, for eligible students, development and implementation of the IEP must be completed within 90 calendar days of receipt of parental consent for the initial evaluation. (N.J.A.C. 6A:14-3.4).
Initial IEP meeting
The initial IEP must be developed and implemented within the same 90-day window that starts at receipt of consent for evaluation, so there is no separate 30-day clock running after eligibility. (N.J.A.C. 6A:14-3.4; N.J.A.C. 6A:14-3.7).
Goal alignment
SMART goals aligned to New Jersey Student Learning Standards, plus functional and adaptive domains.
IEP system & forms
No single statewide IEP system. Districts and their child study teams use vendor IEP platforms and must produce IEPs that meet N.J.A.C. 6A:14-3.7 content requirements.
Transition planning
Transition components flagged for review by age 14, supporting Indicator 13.
